The Reze Arc Movie Leads the U.S. Box Office in Debut Weekend

Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Following the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million at the box office, the latest Chainsaw Man film has surpassed the $100 million threshold globally, reaching a international earnings of $108 million during its debut. This feature surpassed Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Strong U.S. and Global Performance

Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M domestically after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday performance. Globally, the animated by MAPPA film grossed $14.7M across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Parallels to Previous Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the feature's anticipated earnings to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the North America in the year 2022 and started with a similar $18M in the U.S.. This movie's debut weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108 million global gross presently stands slightly below that movie's $166.6 million final run. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the numbers of mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.

Fan Engagement Efforts Boost Success

Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to boost their supremacy at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc marketing campaign launched at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a notable appearance at NYCC featuring exclusive clips, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the concluding day of the gathering.

Looking Ahead

This year marks a significant period for Japanese animation, and for the company, which has one more feature-length anime premiering this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
